Listening to the Spirit

Handouts/Activities:
1) For this age, I love to have them color ears and we fasten them to their ears with loose rubber bands. You could also leave a tag of paper at the top of them to fold over the back of their ear and fasten that way.  They really enjoy their big, colorful ears.
An illustration of two ears.

2) Drop a piece of paper. Really. Convince the children to be quiet and see if they can hear the paper hit the floor. If they can, because you have more than two gathered in the name of Christ, the Holy Ghost will feel thick and very discernible in the room. Once they can feel the difference and can feel the Holy Ghost, discuss why maybe they couldn't feel Him before. Were they trying to listen for Him before? Was the classroom too loud? Did they need to be more reverent?

3) Listen to a piece of music (Not the whole piece, just enough to get the point across. Little people aren't patient with classical music). Next let them hear the sound of an instrument, like a drum, flute, or violin. Then listen to the piece of music and have them raise their hands when they can hear the instrument play. They can hear that instrument when they couldn't before because they listened on purpose for it. Discuss how we need to listen on purpose for the whisper of the Holy Ghost. As we practice listening for it, we will hear the whisper more and more.

4) Make a box and take turns tossing it to see the different ways you can invite the Holy Ghost into your life.

5) Make a reverence mini book:

6) Make a Holy Ghost mini book:

7) Match the words to the pictures. (Teacher will be doing all the reading):

8) Learn The Holy Ghost in American Sign language. To the right of the LDS.org page there is a download link for this video song in ASL.

9) Make a mini book from the pictures in the article "Inviting the Sprit" By Hilary Watkins Lemon.

10) Read "How can I be guided by the Holy Ghost?" and color this horse coloring page:

11) Read Obstetrical Course Challenge and set up and obstetrical course in class with the chairs.

Primary 4 Lesson 6: Heavenly Father Commands Nephi to Build a Ship

Handouts:

1) Use the little images in the story "Nephi Builds a Ship" to make a mini book. You can print them end to end in a Microsoft Word Document to make an accordion style flip book (Folded back and forth. Probably your easiest option). You could also print them with a white boarder and have children tie the books (traditional book style) together after you hole punch the edge. If you do this you'll have blank sides of the pages. I would use those to have the children draw pictures of how they can be obedient, faithful,  and brave like Nephi was when he was keeping the Lord's commandment to build a ship.

The Lord told Nephi how to do it

2) Use the little images in the story "Nephi Builds a Ship to make a memory matching game. Print the images on heavy paper. I would copy/paste the images into a Microsoft Word document for this. Cut the images out after printing 2 sets. To play place the "cards" face down and take turns turning them over to see if you can find a match.

Laman and Lemuel repented  Laman and Lemuel repented

3) Make a sand diorama: Okay, this sounds messy. I'd use dry beans if I was going that route. Here's a shortcut. If you copy/paste and crop this in a Microsoft Word document you can make them stand up just by folding them. For example, If I pasted it into a Word doc once and cropped it down to just Nephi, then put him at the bottom of the page I could cut him out in a rectangle, leaving an identical space of white rectangle paper above him, so it's one strip of paper with Nephi at the bottom. After printing it on cardstock, I would fold it in half and stand it up. I've seen lessons where they tape the edges together to make a pocket for finger puppets.

Nephi obeyed

4) When the Lord told Nephi to build a ship, Nephi made his own tools. Circle the tools Nephi might have made in those days, then color the pictures. The resource for this is very low pixel on LDS.org. Perhaps it would be okay to use other tool images (Maybe ones like these). If you can find them, a mobile made of tools might be fun. A class of boys might enjoy a paper tool belt.

5) Make popsicle stick puppets:

6) Memorize this scripture:
Lord commands

7)Fold Origami Boats
